Many years ago, I thought essential oils were just another option to make your house smell nice. I didn't realize at first that essential oils were power houses for mental and physical health!
Once I started to explore what essential oils really were, I discovered that essential oils are extremely useful in influencing and supporting our emotional health.
The answer to that question lies with science. Each oil has its own unique chemical makeup; those unique chemicals are what gives each oil its own superpower. Some oils energize us while others calm us down. For instance, a main chemical component in lavender oil is linalool. Linalool is found in many plants including roses, lavender, and basil. This component is what causes the brain to calm down and experience a decrease in stress. This is backed up by studies which show that, in animal studies, the vapors of linalool stimulated feelings of calm. In addition, certain blood cells were "brought into equilibrium" by the scent of linalool-containing lavender.
Long story short: the science backs up what we have always known: stopping to smell the flowers IS actually good for your mental health!
As humans, we experience an incredible range of emotions in a single day (or even just the span of an hour!). While not every emotion we feel is pleasant, essential oils are there to help us manage our mood.
Because each oil has a unique chemical structure and aroma, each oil is then able to create a different chemical reaction in the brain, which causes different emotions and internal responses. We already know that our sense of smell produces powerful mental and emotional responses - this is why cinnamon reminds me of Christmas or why the smell of hay always takes me back to my Grandmother's farm. This is also the reason why it is so easy to use essential oils to influence our emotions.
Which essential oils to use to influence moods
My favorite invigorating oils are:
If you are feeling weighed down by a heavy burden, doTERRA's Forgive blend counteracts negative feelings of guilt and regret and increases feelings of relief. Diffuse it during mediation or apply to pulse points.
Calming and soothing
Of course, lavender tops the list of calming and soothing essential oils, but the list is not limited to that one oil. Dr. Axe also recommends:
Some of the most energizing oils are the citrus gang. Lemon, grapefruit, and wild orange. I also like to diffuse peppermint and lemon together for a fresh burst of energy. Peppermint taken internally is also another go-to of mine. If you prefer, the Peppermint beadlets energize you while freshening yoru breath - win win!
Alleviate negative emotions
Ease feelings of anger and frustration
Some of the most overwhelming emotions, anger and frustration can be a huge obstacle to joyful living. Oils to help alleviate these emotions include: Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, and the Forgive Blend.
If you have a to-do list that is a mile long but zero motivation to get it done, then doTERRA's Motivate blend is key. Key oils in this blend include:
Remember that you should never ingest oils unless they are of the highest quality, free from pesticides, fillers, and adulterants. If an oil price is "too good to be true" then you are most likely getting synthetic oil.
