Real Life Babywearing: Sick Babies

No mama likes when their baby is sick. But every mama likes to have an arsenal of tools and tricks to help make baby feel better.

Of course, there are the tools to help with the physical pain: pain medications, saline spray, humidifiers, etc. But what about the emotional pains of being sick? Two of my go-to's for healing emotional pain during an illness is breastfeeding and babywearing.

Babywearing to the rescue!

Babywearing to the rescue!  When my youngest developed an ear infection, nothing made him happy. His favorite toys? Nope. Favorite snack? Nada. He only wanted me. As soon as I popped in my carrier, he was content. His ear infection obviously wasn't cured by babywearing, but his emotional needs were met. Once his love tanked was filled up with the closeness he desired, he could rest easier knowing Mama was close. And that rest is what he needed to fight the bug... that and some medicine.

Have you tried babywearing when your baby is sick?

We grow basil in our garden, and it usually is a hardy herb that produces much during the season.   So we tend to eat a lot of recipes including basil in the summer. Our toddler loves to help pick the basil.

Ingredients:

1 can of frozen pineapple juice concentrate (Don't add the water)
1-2 cups of milk, depending on the consistency you prefer
Fresh basil leaves, to taste

Blend all in the blender and enjoy!

Toddler Approved Green Shake

Juicing, smoothies, and shakes have grown in increasing popularity over the last few years. What's not to love? A quick, portable, delicious drink that's packed with nutritional goodness?
As far as meal replacement shakes go, the key is to balance enough good fat and protein so that you stay full. It's easy to just keep adding fruit into the blender, but too much fruit can quickly rack up the calories . Because green shakes can tend to be less sweet because of this, not too many kids jump for joy at the prospect. However, I found a green smoothie that is not bitter because spinach is one of the more mild leafy greens. I didn't set out to make a "toddler approved" green shake, but my toddler definitely loves to share some sips.
.Enter: Katie's Green Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 frozen banana (frozen? yes! This eliminates the need for ice which makes the smoothie creamier)
A few handfuls of raw baby spinach
1 scoop of grass-fed chocolate whey protein powder
1-1.5 cups almond milk (make your own or buy one without carrageenan)
1-3 TBL almond butter
Step 1: Blend the spinach and almond milk until all of the leaves are blended evenly.
Step 2: Add the banana, powder, and almond butter.
*Tip: Peel the banana before you freeze it. Much easier to peel a banana before it's frozen.

A New Day, A New Blog

3/17/2016

Well, here I am again.  In 2010, I wrote a blog post with this excerpt:
"I'm going to start a new blog. This one is about my life - my experiences as a newlywed, a student, a preschool teaching assistant.  I'm at a crossroads in life...  things are changing a lot.  I don't mean that in a bad way either.  I just got married, just started a new job, and am trying to finish my last semester of my undergraduate degree.  So I figured, I would share my life experiences because I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world who is trying to get her life going in the right direction.

I guess I'll start with my reason for the name of the blog.  "A Time For Daffodils" is my favorite poem... there's a time for everything.  Everything has a reason.  This relates perfectly to my life.  There is a time for everything.  It's time for me to be part of the "real world."  There was a time when I could carelessly waste my summer days and chase down the ice cream man, but my time for that is over... until I'm chasing my kids who are chasing down the ice cream man. Haha.

Anyway, there's a time for everything.  I hope that this blog can give guidance to others who are learning the challenges of "growing up."  We all have to do it, but it's nice when you know someone else is going through the same thing.

i think it is a very profound poem... it has a slightly different structure than what we normally see with poems -because of the parentheses... but read it...its deep :-) i had to read it a few times before i got it, but its quite enlightening.... i know im a geeky english major but i just got really excited when i figured it out so i wanted to share it with you."

Six years later and man oh man are those words eerily prophetic. Once again I am at a crossroads but a very different crossroads than before. Fast forward half of a master's degree, two children, six moves (yep... SIX), and the launch of a new business. My life has changed dramatically from my newlywed life. Now, as a stay at home mother who has a passion for natural parenting and homeschooling, my life is very different looking from what it looked like 6 years ago. But that's okay. Life is nothing if not changing!

And because I love it so much, here is the poem that inspired me so long ago:
a time for daffodils
ee cummings

in time of daffodils(who know
the goal of living is to grow)
forgetting why,remember how

in time of lilacs who proclaim
the aim of waking is to dream,
remember so(forgetting seem)

in time of roses(who amaze
our now and here with paradise)
forgetting if,remember yes

in time of all sweet things beyond
whatever mind may comprehend,
remember seek(forgetting find)

and in a mystery to be (when time
from time shall set us free)
forgetting me,remember me
